Men’s Tennis outlasts Averett, 4-3

Stabile’s third-set comeback in fourth singles delivers Sea Gull victory

SALISBURY, Md. – On the back of a furious third-set comeback by Bobby Stabile in fourth singles, the Salisbury University men's tennis team emerged victorious in a marathon five-hour match against the Averett Cougars, winning 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at the SU Indoor Tennis Center.

MATCH NOTES
  • After the Cougars won the doubles point by taking all three tilts, the Sea Gulls began their comeback by winning two of the top three singles fixtures. Gurv Suri cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win in first singles, while Nicholas O'Dea also swept through second singles, 7-5, 6-2.
  • Aron Bursztyn kept SU in it from fifth singles, rallying from a first-set defeat to steal a point from AU's Rafael Jodas, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
  • With the match tied at 3-3, it all came down to a fourth singles showdown between Bobby Stabile and Lucas Fiandra. Fiandra took the first set 6-3, while Stabile bounced back for a 7-5 positive margin in set two. In the third set, Fiandra took it to the brink by going up 5-2, but Stabile stormed back to force a tiebreaker and kept rolling from there, securing the third set and the team win 7-6 (7-1).

The Sea Gulls will play a third match in three days on Sunday with a home tilt against Gettysburg. First serve is slated for 1 p.m., with Senior Day festivities to be hosted at approximately 12:30 p.m.
