SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 7 Salisbury University men's lacrosse program earned a 22-11 midweek win over Baldwin Wallace University on Tuesday afternoon inside Sea Gull Stadium.
The Salisbury (13-3) offense clicked on all cylinders early, posting three goals in the first five minutes of action. All three early goals actually came in a two-minute span against the Baldwin Wallace (13-4) defense. The Sea Gulls finished the first quarter with a 7-0 lead. SU found goals from
Preston Huffman,
Bret Bergey,
Benjamin Adams,
Chris Wong,
Riley Strub, and
Connor Herraiz. Herraiz, Huffman,
Cooper Keesee, and Bergey added first-quarter assists.
The second frame of action was more of the same from the Sea Gulls, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 6-1, and heading into the halftime break with a 13-1 advantage. Long pole
Bryce Stevenson found the back of the net off an assist from
Charles Fritchman in the second, and
Trent Lucovich also found his first goal of the game before the halftime intermission.
The third quarter was more on the competitive side, as the teams finished the frame tied 6-6. The Sea Gulls still boasted a 19-7 lead heading into the final quarter of action. The Yellow Jackets tallied four straight goals, which was halted by Strub with just three seconds left in the quarter.
Jack Beaulieu added his name to the scoresheet in the third, while
Michael Leahy tallied a goal in the fourth, just a minute and a half in. The Yellow Jackets outscored the Sea Gulls 4-3 in the fourth, but the early lead from SU earned them the 22-11 win.
GAME NOTES
- Preston Huffman soared to new career-highs with five goals on five shots and three helpers. Huffman past the 40-point plateau with the strong outing.
- Bret Bergey and Connor Herraiz chipped in six points each. Bergey inserted himself with four tallies and two helpers to fifth on the team in points (31). Herraiz's two-goal, four-assist day puts him eight points shy of the century mark on the campaign.
- Riley Strub turned out a four-point afternoon with a hat-trick and an assist.
- 12 different Sea Gulls registered a point, including a two-assist performance from Charles Fritchman and a first career tally from Benjamin Adams.
- Jack Beaulieu and Joe Buxbaum each caused two turnovers. Beaulieu buried his first career goal and vacuumed up five grounders.
- Blake Malamphy went 11-for-17 at the dot. Charles Fritchman, Jimmy Son and Ryan Lazzara went a combined 9-for-20 in relief.
- Matt Sentowski improved to 12-3 on the season, making six saves. Collin Fohner entered to start the fourth quarter and made four stops.
- The Sea Gulls outshot the Yellow Jackets 49-45, won the ground ball battle 46-33 and went 24-of-26 on clears.
The Sea Gulls are back in action at Sea Gull Stadium when they play host to Washington College on Friday for the 58th edition of the War on the Shore. This also serves as Senior Day and POA day with post-game fireworks, with game time set for 7 p.m.
