SALISBURY, Md. - In front of a "standing room"
only homecoming crowd of nearly 2,500, the Sea Gulls played one of
their most complete games of the season. Making plays on offense,
defense and special teams, Salisbury (3-3) treated its fans to a
high-scoring victory over Morrisville State (1-6).
A prophetic Coach Sherman Wood stressed two points in his
Thursday press luncheon. Wood emphasized having his offense take
the field first. Normally deferring to the second half, Salisbury
wanted to make an offensive statement right away. Wood also stated
his goal for the special teams, a punt block.
Salisbury wasted little time achieving Wood's goals. On the
first play of the game, Byron Westbrook took the
opening kick down the sideline for an 83 yard touchdown. With
Morrisville State still reeling, the Sea Gulls continued to attack.
Salisbury recovered a fumble on the second play from scrimmage and
cashed in five plays later on a Ronnie Curley to
Jamar Garner ten yard strike.
Curley filled the stat-sheet with three passing and two rushing
touchdowns. He threw for 110 yards and gained another 124 on the
ground to lead the offense.
Still in the first quarter, Paul Cynewski
blocked a Mustang punt and Zach Armiger covered
the loose ball in the end zone for the touchdown to put the Sea
Gulls up 21-0.
Converting turnovers to scores and capitalizing on opportunities
in the red zone, Salisbury went into half leading 34-0.
The second half start was not much different than the first.
After a three-and-out from Morrisville, Curley opened the scoring
with a dazzling 53 yard scramble. Curley would throw for big plays
in the third quarter as well. The sophomore quarterback found
Kevin Tillage from 28 yards out and Avery
Willie from 32 out, less than five minutes apart.
Morrisville's lone score came on a 93 yard kickoff return by
Derric Woodard. The Mustangs mustered only 50 yards passing and 83
yards rushing on 50 plays.
Salisbury forced four turnovers, three fumble recoveries and one
Westbrook interception. The Sea Gulls did most of their damage on
the ground, rushing for 309 yards.
Junior lineman Daniel Bullock led the Gulls
defense with five solo tackles including two sacks.
Salisbury has a short week before a Thursday night meeting
against Saint Peter's in Jersey City, New Jersey. At home last
season, the Gulls defeated this Division I opponent, 41-16.
