NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Salisbury University's men's
soccer team traveled to Christopher Newport on Wednesday night and
suffered its fourth defeat of the season, 4-1.
The Sea Gulls (8-4-1) trailed most of the game by two goals
until senior Wijy Jones netted a Dave
Kroening pass in the 76th minute to cut the lead in half
to 2-1. This is Jones' third straight game with goal and is now
tied with sophomore Nick Malone for the team lead with six.
Christopher Newport (11-4) countered the comeback threat
immediately with a score from senior Daniel Fogarty nearly one
minute after the Salisbury strike.
SU could not capitalize on opportunities. The Gulls took 11
corners and had nine shots on target but only managed one score.
CNU goalie Matt Tengs did not make things easy for SU with eight
saves.
The Captains finalized the scoring in the 90th minute with
junior forward Michael Caro's second goal of the contest set up by
Derek Shaw. Caro's first goal started the scoring in the first half
at the 19 minute mark with an assist from Kyle Allen. CNU scored
just two minutes later with a Fogarty penalty kick goal in the 21st
minute past SU goalie Scott McGuire which put the
Captains up 2-0.
The victory was Christopher Newport's sixth straight and first
over Salisbury since 2000.
