Box Score SALISBURY, Md. - The temperature dipped into
the 40's and the winds whipped around consistently over 10 mph on
Wednesday afternoon at Sea Gull Field but neither the natural
elements or Washington College could stop Salisbury University
field hockey senior Megan Powell.
The co-captain scored a hat trick (fourth of the year) and
recorded a season-high seven points as the fifth-ranked Sea Gulls
rolled the Shorewomen, 8-1, in the final regular-season game for SU
(14-3).
It didn't take long for Powell to find the back of the cage and
light up the scoreboard. Less then two and a half minutes into the
first half the Elkton, Md. native, fired home a pass from fellow
senior co-captain Lynette Sgrignoli (two goals,
one assist). Powell stuck two second half goals to increase her
goal total for the year to 23.
Washington (2-13) scored on its only shot of the first half as
Shane Moser deflected in a pass from Rachel Miller to cut the SU
lead to one, 2-1, midway through the first half. The Sea Gulls led
3-1 at the break as Sgrignoli scored her first goal of the day off
an assist from Powell.
In the second half it was all Salisbury. The Sea Gulls peppered
the WC goal with 12 shots and scored five times to win their fifth
straight game. Freshman Lauren Correll scored two
goals, back-to-back, early in the second half to give her 12 goals
on the year.
SU outshot WC 32-2 and took 20 more corners (22-2) then the
Shorewomen. WC goalie Elena Nicholoff made 14 saves in the loss.
Salisbury will next play at 1 p.m., Sunday, October 29, in the
first round of the 2006 Capital Athletic Conference tournament
against Goucher College. The Sea Gulls are the No. 2 seed in the
tourney and will be the host for the game versus seventh-seed
Goucher.
