SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury University took care
of business in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference
Field Hockey Tournament as it buried Goucher College 11-0 on Sunday
afternoon at Sea Gull Field. SU received hat tricks from freshman
Lauren Correll and sophomore Jerre
Carter as the Sea Gulls advance to the CAC semifinals
where they will host third-seed St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday,
November 1.
The Sea Gulls (15-3) used dynamic performances from Correll and
Carter who each scored three goals in a half. Correll notched three
in the first half and Carter did her damage in the second frame.
Salisbury opened the scoring less than 10 minutes into the
contest as Correll netted the eventual game-winner on a backhand
shot off a rebound. Senior Megan Powell scored her
24th and 25th goals of the season in the first half and senior
Abby Rowe banged home her 12th goal on a precise
feed from fellow senior Lynette Sgrignoli.
Salisbury led 6-0 at the half.
In the second half, the Gulls rested their starters to give the
SU bench valuable game experience. Juniors Ashley
Spencer and Lauren Dietz found the back
of the cage to complement the Carter hat trick.
Salisbury held Goucher (1-14) shotless while SU racked up 38.
Aline Haddad made 16 saves, two of which came on penalty strokes,
for the Gophers. Danielle Marks and Jen Madera each had a defensive
save.
Salisbury continues its quest toward a 12th consecutive CAC
title as it hosts St. Mary's on
