SALISBURY, Md. - The third-seed Gallaudet
University Bison charged from two games down to rally and hold off
second-seed Salisbury University with a stunning 3-2 victory in the
Capital Athletic Conference volleyball semifinal on Thursday night
at the Maggs Center.
Bison senior Tamijo Foronda, the CAC kills leader, came through
with back-to-back kills to end the fifth game and hand Gallaudet
the 26-30, 22-30, 30-20, 30-26, 16-14 victory.
Salisbury (22-13) set the tone early as the Sea Gulls battled
through the first game and won it down the stretch thanks to
sophomore Savannah Tinsley's serving (four
straight points). Junior Jessica Powell came up
with a game ending block as SU won 30-26.
In the second game, there were 10 ties before SU freshman
Nicole Massarelli (seven blocks) served six
straight points to give the Sea Gulls the lead for good. Sophomore
Stacey Krebs recorded two of her team high 14
kills in two of the three final SU points as the Gulls won 30-22.
Gallaudet (27-9) woke up in the third game and took control as
the Bison led by 10 points late in the game and coasted to the
30-20 win. In the fourth game, the two teams were neck-and-neck for
the majority of the game before Bison freshman Shana Lehmann scored
four crucial points off her serve. Foronda ended the fourth game
with a tip as the Bison tied the match at two apiece with the 30-26
victory.
In the fifth and final game the Sea Gulls led early, as much as
10-8, but the Bison erased that lead and grew a lead of three
behind the serving from freshman Amanda Krieger (four straight
points). Salisbury tied the game at 14 off two consecutive
Gallaudet errors. That set the stage for Foronda to carry her team
victory.
SU senior Abbey Petrecca recorded a
double-double, 34 assists and 22 digs, and added eight kills to
boot. Sophomore Lucy Rushing had 13 kills and
seven blocks while teammate Jaime Marzocchi came
up with 19 digs in the loss.
Gallaudet advances to the CAC championship where it will face
top-seed Marymount University on Saturday, November 4. The Saints
defeated St. Mary's (Md.) College, 3-1 (30-19, 33-31, 26-30,
30-28), on Thursday evening.
