CHESTER, Pa. - The Salisbury University
football team ended its two-game losing streak Saturday afternoon
with an impressive upset of Widener University, 17-14, in front of
crowd of 2,500 at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.
Widener (6-3) came out of halftime and scored quick, just 1:23
into the half, as quarterback Matt Campbell connected with Elliott
White on a 35-yard touchdown pass to even the score at 14.
The final points of the game came with 4:06 to play in the third
quarter as junior Brendan Kincaid split the up
rights on a 44-yard field goal to give Salisbury (4-5) a 17-14
lead.
Widener won the battle of field position and saw the majority of
its fourth quarter drives start inside the Sea Gull territory.
However, the Salisbury defense stood strong, as it forced two
Byron Westbrook interceptions in the final
two-minutes to seal the victory for Salisbury.
The Pioneers struck first, scoring just under four minutes into
the game as Campbell found Jamie Schild for a 26-yard scoring
strike. Schild led all receivers on the day with eight receptions
for 162 yards and one touchdown.
It didn't take long for the Sea Gulls (4-5) to respond as junior
Jamar Garner scored on a nine-yard toss from
sophomore quarterback Ronnie Curley to even the
score at seven. The Garner score came after a botched punt return
by Widener that gave Salisbury possession inside the Pioneer
10-yard line.
Salisbury scored one more time before intermission on a 47-yard
touchdown pass from Curley to Kevin Tillage with
8:37 to play in the second quarter to give Salisbury a 14-7 lead.
Tillage led the Sea Gulls in receiving as he caught three passes
for 112 yards and one touchdown. Curley finished the game 6-12
passing for 123 yards and one touchdown.
The Sea Gull defense held Widener to 67 rushing yards and 225
passing yards while forcing four turnovers. Salisbury gained 236
total yards of offense on 113 passing and 123 rushing yards.
The Sea Gulls will return to action next Saturday, November 11
as they play Frostburg State University in the annual Regents Cup
at Towson University in Johnny Unitas Stadium
