SALISBURY, Md. - The 22nd ranked Salisbury
University men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season
to the hands of defending Capital Athletic Conference champion and
fifth-ranked York College 2-1 in overtime on Saturday afternoon.
York (5-0-1, 2-0 CAC) leading goal scorer Andrew Wheeler scored
the game-winner at the 98th minute to lift the Spartans over the
Sea Gulls. The loss snaps the Sea Gulls' three-game winning streak.
The game was a very physical game as 51 fouls were committed by
the two teams (York-26 fouls, Salisbury-25 fouls).
The Spartans scored the game's first goal right before halftime
as Travis Williams assisted Mike Baker, who scored past SU goalie
Scott McGuire. York led 1-0 at the half.
In the second half, Salisbury (3-1-1, 1-1 CAC) got on the board
as sophomore forward Nick Malone fired home a scorcher, from the
top of the box, past York goalie Kyle Marks to knot the game at one
apiece.
York outshot Salisbury, 2-1, in the overtime period.
The Spartans defeated the Sea Gulls 1-0 last year in the CAC
championship game held at the SU Soccer Complex.
Salisbury next plays host to Gallaudet University on Tuesday,
September 19th at 4:00 p.m. in a CAC game.
