SU Opens Season with 4-0 Victory over St. Mary's (Md.)

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Salisbury University field hockey team, the three-time defending NCAA Division III national champions, began its 2006 campaign with a solid Capital Athletic Conference win, 4-0, over St. Mary's College (Md.) on the road.

Salisbury senior Megan Powell scored a game-high three goals on seven shots as the Sea Gulls (1-0, 1-0 CAC) outshot the Seahawks, 24-5. Powell scored the game's first two goals before senior Lynette Sgrignoli (1 goal, 1 assist) found the back of the cage off an assist from Abby Rowe. Freshman Lauren Correll added an assist on Powell's first goal to record her first point as a Sea Gull.

The Seahawks (0-1, 0-1) forced Sea Gull goalie Maria Ramoundos to make five saves in the first half, three of which came of the stick of Emily Smithson.

SU led St. Mary's 3-0 at the half.

In the second half, the Sea Gulls tightened their defense and shutout the Seahawks holding them to no shots and no corners.

Powell completed her hat trick late in the game on an unassisted goal past Emily Richards (12 saves).

The Sea Gulls return to action this Wednesday, Sept. 6 at home when they square off against Christopher Newport University at 4:30 p.m.
