ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Salisbury University
field hockey team, the three-time defending NCAA Division III
national champions, began its 2006 campaign with a solid Capital
Athletic Conference win, 4-0, over St. Mary's College (Md.) on the
road.
Salisbury senior Megan Powell scored a
game-high three goals on seven shots as the Sea Gulls (1-0, 1-0
CAC) outshot the Seahawks, 24-5. Powell scored the game's first two
goals before senior Lynette Sgrignoli (1 goal, 1
assist) found the back of the cage off an assist from Abby Rowe.
Freshman Lauren Correll added an assist on Powell's first goal to
record her first point as a Sea Gull.
The Seahawks (0-1, 0-1) forced Sea Gull goalie Maria
Ramoundos to make five saves in the first half, three of
which came of the stick of Emily Smithson.
SU led St. Mary's 3-0 at the half.
In the second half, the Sea Gulls tightened their defense and
shutout the Seahawks holding them to no shots and no corners.
Powell completed her hat trick late in the game on an unassisted
goal past Emily Richards (12 saves).
The Sea Gulls return to action this Wednesday, Sept. 6 at home
when they square off against Christopher Newport University at 4:30
p.m.
