SALISBURY, Md. - York College shutout Salisbury
2-0 on Saturday afternoon on the road in Capital Athletic
Conference women's soccer action. The Spartans improve to 7-3-1
overall, 2-1 in the conference while the Sea Gulls fall to 3-4-1
for the season, 1-2 in the CAC.
Salisbury opened the match with a flare as the Sea Gulls
registered a good scoring chance with a shot on goal which resulted
in a corner kick within the first minute.
The Spartan defense held strong as they only allowed two
additional Salisbury shots for the remainder of the game. The Sea
Gulls could muster just the one corner against the Spartan defense
and goalkeeper Amanda Lomberg (two saves).
Providing the offense for York was junior Emily Sullivan who
scored a goal in each half. Her second goal came from a penalty
kick after a hand-ball in the box was called against Salisbury.
Sullivan's game-winning goal in the first half was a header just
over the outstretched hands of Sea Gull goalie Samantha
Phipps. For the game, Phipps made three saves and back-up
goalie Kristin Greene had one.
SU junior Sara Schmidt and sophomore
Dana Passucci had the only shots on goal for the
Gulls, despite having possession for the majority of the game. The
York defense of Caitlin Allen, Katie Kegerreis and Lauren Stewart
denied the Salisbury attack and clogged progress on several
occasions.
The Sea Gulls head for the road with trips to Rowan and CAC foe
Mary Washington in the coming week.
