SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury University field
hockey captain Megan Powell is off to an
expeditious start to her senior season as she has scored five goals
in the first two games the three-time defending NCAA Division III
national champions have played.
Powell scored twice during the first half of today's
non-conference game against Christopher Newport University where
the Sea Gulls held on to win, 2-1, and extend their winning streak
to 12 games dating back to October 9, 2005.
The Gulls (2-0) first mark came during the 17th minute when
freshman Lauren Correll fed Powell, staked
out in front of the Captains' goal, who fired home a shot into
the lower left corner of the CNU cage.
Powell's second mark came four minutes before the half when
fellow senior captain Abby Rowe assisted Powell,
off the penalty corner, who beat CNU goalie Ashley Whipple (11
saves) to send the Gulls into the break leading 2-0.
Christopher Newport (0-2) got on the board quickly in the second
half as junior midfielder Ashley Hay scored thru heavy traffic in
front of the Sea Gull goal, one minute into the second half. CNU
sophomore Anne Gehring was credited with the assist.
Salisbury held on for the rest of the game as the Sea Gull
defense squashed several Captains' scoring opportunities. Junior
goalie Maria Ramoundos made two saves in the win.
SU outshot CNU, 20-7, and the Gulls took 10 more penalty corners
(17-7) then the Captains. Salisbury has now won the past six
meetings between the two teams and have outscored the Captains 26-4
during that span.
The Sea Gulls will next host the Salisbury Invitational this
weekend as they welcome Denison, Eastern Mennonite and SUNY
Brockport to the area. SU will play at 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on
Saturday, September 9 and 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, September 10.
