YORK, Pa. - The Salisbury University volleyball
team defeated Capital Athletic Conference foe York (Pa.) College on
the road Wednesday night, 3-1, at the Grumbacher Sport &
Fitness Center.
The Spartans took the first set from the Gulls 28-30. SU (20-6,
5-0 CAC) bounced back and won the next three sets, 30-24, 30-23,
30-27. The second set was not as close as the score indicated as
Salisbury held an early 15-6 lead only to have the Spartans rally
late in the set for a few cosmetic points.
In the third set, the two teams went back and forth before
Salisbury pulled away. The two squads were not more than three
points away from each other until the Sea Gulls fashioned a 9-2
spurt that turned a 21-21 tie into a 30-23 win. Sophomore
Gabby Long came up with a tremendous dig as she
dove across the court in the third set to keep the momentum in the
Gulls' favor. Long finished the game with 31 digs, two service aces
and two kills. The Gulls closed out the match with a 30-27 win in
the fourth set.
"Long was a digging machine for us tonight. Her diving dig in
the third set was huge," said SU coach Margie
Knight. "Jaime [Marzocchi] was able to set-up the kills
and Nicole [Massarelli] owned the net for us. This was a total team
effort."
Massarelli finished the game 10-for-26 in kills
(.385) and added five block assists. Junior outside hitter
Stacey Krebs had 17 kills, 11 digs and five block
assists. Marzocchi ended up with a team-high 44
assists, four kills, two aces and nine digs. Sophomore
Rachel Downes recorded 13 kills in the Sea Gulls'
fifth conference win.
The maroon and gold handed York (19-5, 4-2 CAC) its second loss
in conference play, both at home, and snapped its four match win
streak. Spartan Lindsay Schorner contributed 12 kills and 25 digs
to lead York.
Salisbury hit .201 for the match while it racked up nine team
blocks and 85 digs. The Spartans hit just .061 in the match as they
had 52 kills and 40 errors which doubled Salisbury's 20 miscues for
the evening. The Spartans' attack percentage (.061) is the second
lowest mark of the year while their 40 errors tied a season-high.
Salisbury remains undefeated in the CAC and in first place along
with St. Mary's (Md.) College. The two first place teams will meet
this Tuesday (October 16) at the Maggs Center for a 7 p.m. match.
SU is trying to pack the Maggs Center for the first-place showdown.
The first 300 SU students in attendance will receive a rally towel.
Admission is free and open to all.
Before SU can turn its attention to the showdown with the
Seahawks the Sea Gulls will participate in the Green Terror
Invitational at McDaniel College in Westminster, Md., this weekend
(October 12-13). The Gulls will face St. Mary's (Minn.), Marymount
(Va.) and host McDaniel.
