MORRISVILLE, N.Y. - On a cold and sunny
afternoon where temperatures dropped to 45 degrees the No. 9 Sea
Gulls heated up the scoreboard in the second half with a 42-point
effort en route to a 56-20 win over Morrisville State College.
For the first time this season Salisbury's rushing attack produced
two 100-yard performers as sophomore Valdase
Morris and senior Jamar Garner ran for
122 and 102 yards each, respectively.
Morris carried the ball only five times and scored twice on the
ground while Garner ran the ball six times and hit pay-dirt
once.
The Sea Gulls (7-0, 2-0 ACFC) have now won 10 consecutive games
dating back to last season and scored 40 or more points in 4-of-7
games this year.
SU scored the game's first touchdown on its first possession as
Morris capped off a three play, 52-yard drive with a 48-yard
scoring run.
The Mustangs (1-6) answered on its very next play from scrimmage as
Billy Poling connected with Brandon Tape for a 76-yard scoring
strike. Poling finished the game 10-for-26 with 118 yards, one
touchdown and three interceptions.
Garner gave the Sea Gulls a 14-7 lead midway through the first
quarter with a 76-yard touchdown run but Morrisville State
connected on two field goal attempts in the second quarter to make
the score 14-13 at the half.
Salisbury opened the third quarter with a five play, 62-yard drive
that resulted in a Ronnie Curley 14-yard score to
give the Gulls a 21-13 lead. Curley ran the ball 12 times for 63
yards and scored twice and added a 38-yard touchdown pass to Morris
with seven minutes left in the third quarter to put SU up
28-13.
The maroon and gold continued its onslaught in the third quarter as
Curley added his second rushing touchdown (29 yards) and after a
Poling interception Bobby Sheahin found
Kevin Tillage for a 32-yard TD pass to put SU up
42-13.
SU ran for 173 yards on 19 carries in the third quarter and was a
perfect 2-for-2 in the air for 70 yards and two scores.
Sheahin and Morris each added touchdown runs in the fourth quarter
and Morrisville's Darnell Murphy found Tape for a 61-yard score to
give the Gulls the 36-point win.
Junior Jarrell Chandler finished the game with
eight tackles, six tackles for loss (22 yards) and two sacks while
fellow junior McCall Tyler matched Chandler's two
sacks. Sophomore Reggie Gooch was responsible for
two of the three Sea Gull interceptions and junior Greg
Miletic came down with the third.
The Sea Gulls ran the ball for 412 yards on 47 attempts for an 8.8
yard per rush average. Morrisville managed only 30 yards on the
ground and 181 through the air.
Morris finished the contest with a game-high 256 all-purpose yards
(122 rushing, 38 receiving, 96 kick return yards) and a 24.4
average per rush.
The Sea Gulls return to action on Saturday, October 20, for
homecoming as they host Becker College at 1 p.m. at Sea Gull
Stadium.
