Morris, Sea Gulls run through Mustangs

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. - On a cold and sunny afternoon where temperatures dropped to 45 degrees the No. 9 Sea Gulls heated up the scoreboard in the second half with a 42-point effort en route to a 56-20 win over Morrisville State College.

For the first time this season Salisbury's rushing attack produced two 100-yard performers as sophomore Valdase Morris and senior Jamar Garner ran for 122 and 102 yards each, respectively.

Morris carried the ball only five times and scored twice on the ground while Garner ran the ball six times and hit pay-dirt once.

The Sea Gulls (7-0, 2-0 ACFC) have now won 10 consecutive games dating back to last season and scored 40 or more points in 4-of-7 games this year.

SU scored the game's first touchdown on its first possession as Morris capped off a three play, 52-yard drive with a 48-yard scoring run.

The Mustangs (1-6) answered on its very next play from scrimmage as Billy Poling connected with Brandon Tape for a 76-yard scoring strike. Poling finished the game 10-for-26 with 118 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.

Garner gave the Sea Gulls a 14-7 lead midway through the first quarter with a 76-yard touchdown run but Morrisville State connected on two field goal attempts in the second quarter to make the score 14-13 at the half.

Salisbury opened the third quarter with a five play, 62-yard drive that resulted in a Ronnie Curley 14-yard score to give the Gulls a 21-13 lead. Curley ran the ball 12 times for 63 yards and scored twice and added a 38-yard touchdown pass to Morris with seven minutes left in the third quarter to put SU up 28-13.

The maroon and gold continued its onslaught in the third quarter as Curley added his second rushing touchdown (29 yards) and after a Poling interception Bobby Sheahin found Kevin Tillage for a 32-yard TD pass to put SU up 42-13.

SU ran for 173 yards on 19 carries in the third quarter and was a perfect 2-for-2 in the air for 70 yards and two scores.

Sheahin and Morris each added touchdown runs in the fourth quarter and Morrisville's Darnell Murphy found Tape for a 61-yard score to give the Gulls the 36-point win.

Junior Jarrell Chandler finished the game with eight tackles, six tackles for loss (22 yards) and two sacks while fellow junior McCall Tyler matched Chandler's two sacks. Sophomore Reggie Gooch was responsible for two of the three Sea Gull interceptions and junior Greg Miletic came down with the third.

The Sea Gulls ran the ball for 412 yards on 47 attempts for an 8.8 yard per rush average. Morrisville managed only 30 yards on the ground and 181 through the air.

Morris finished the contest with a game-high 256 all-purpose yards (122 rushing, 38 receiving, 96 kick return yards) and a 24.4 average per rush.

The Sea Gulls return to action on Saturday, October 20, for homecoming as they host Becker College at 1 p.m. at Sea Gull Stadium.
