EWING, N.J. - In a matchup of Division III
national powers the No. 3 Salisbury University field hockey team
defeated No. 2 The College of New Jersey, 3-1, Saturday evening at
Lions' Stadium in front of a crowd of 175.
The Sea Gulls (13-1) and Lions (9-2) played a scoreless first half
but TCNJ's Jenny Lubin scored on a feed from Sheri Grondski nearly
15 minutes into the second half to give the Lions a 1-0
advantage.
That would prove to be all the offense TCNJ could muster as
Salisbury scored three consecutive goals en route to the two-goal
win. Sophomore Beverly Beladino scored less than
one minute after Lubin gave the Lions the lead to tie the score at
1-1. Senior Kristina Holland recorded her first of
two assists on the evening on the Beladino goal.
Freshman Abby Tedford assisted the next SU goal at
the 53 minute mark as she passed to sophomore Lauren
Correll for the goal, her 15th of the season. Freshman
Kandice Hancock put the icing on the cake as she
scored at the 63 mark to put SU up 3-1. Holland found Hancock on
the maroon and gold's ninth and final penalty corner of the
game.
Senior goalie Maria Ramoundos made seven saves in
the win as she improved to 13-0 on the season.
The Sea Gulls outshot the Lions, 13-12, but had three fewer penalty
corners then TCNJ, 12-9.
The Lions still hold the series advantage, 21-11-1, but Salisbury
has won the last two meeting between the two programs.
Salisbury returns to the friendly confines of Sea Gull Stadium for
its next game on Tuesday, October 16, at 5:30 p.m. as it hosts
Villa Julie in a Capital Athletic Conference game.
