ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Salisbury University
men's soccer team suffered its first Capital Athletic Conference
loss of the season on Saturday afternoon as St. Mary's (Md.)
defeated the Sea Gulls, 2-1, in overtime in front of a crowd of
500. The loss snapped a five game win streak for the Sea Gulls.
The Sea Gulls (9-4-1, CAC 5-1) started the scoring off in the 18th
minute when sophomore Alex Hargrove scored off a
feed from Senior Zach Grubb.
The Seahawks (7-7-0, CAC 4-3) quickly answered in the 24th minute
of the game as SMC was awarded a penalty kick. Alex Pyzik seized
the opportunity and buried the ball in the back of the net to tie
the score at 1-1.
The game was back and forth throughout the remainder of regulation
as both squads couldn't score to send the game into an extra frame.
In the 100th minute SMC's Misha Simon headed in a direct kick from
Pyzik which proved to be the game winner.
Sophomore goalie Greg Wellinghoff had four saves
in the loss while the Seahawks' Tim Carrier had ten saves.
The Sea Gulls return to action on Wednesday, October 17, at 3:30
p.m. as they host Christopher Newport University at the SU Soccer
Complex.
