Krebs sets school records against Virginia Wesleyan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Salisbury University junior outside hitter Stacey Krebs had a career day on Saturday afternoon against Virginia Wesleyan College at the Batten Center as the Sea Gulls rallied to defeat the Marlins in five sets, 3-2. Salisbury faced a 2-1 deficit but rallied to win the fourth and fifth set to clinch the 30-27, 25-30, 27-30, 30-24, 15-9 victory. Salisbury lost the second match of the day to Christopher Newport University in straight sets 16-30, 27-30, 24-30.

Krebs set a new school record for kills in a single match with 34. She was 34-for-69 on kill attempts with only four errors. Earlier this season the Eldersburg, Md., native tied the school record with 30 kills in a match but Saturday's performance places her alone in that category. She also holds the school record for attempts in a match with 77 set earlier this season against Frostburg State University. The 34 kills also gives Krebs 491 kills for the season which breaks the school records for kills in a season of 469 held by Jen O'Neil in 1998. Krebs later added 10 kills in the 3-0 loss to CNU to give her over 500 kills for the season.

Fellow junior Jaime Marzocchi came so close to setting a new school record of her own as she made 65 assists in the VWC match. Marzocchi fell two assists short of breaking the mark of 66 held by Katie Korreck set on Nov. 2, 2000 vs. Marymount (Va.) University. Marzocchi made 24 assists against the Captains.

Sophomore Gabby Long had 53 combined digs in the two matches (30 vs. VWC, 23 vs. CNU) while fellow sophomores Rachel Downes made 13 kills vs. VWC and nine kills vs. CNU and Nicole Massarelli made 16 kills in 38 attempts against the Marlins and nine kills against the Captains.

Salisbury will now turn its attention to the 2007 Capital Athletic Conference tournament where the Sea Gulls are the No. 2 seed and will host No. 7 seed Wesley College in a quarterfinal match on Tuesday, October 30, at 7 p.m. in the Maggs Center.
