SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University
volleyball team lost a tough 3-0 non-conference match to
Christopher Newport University on Wednesday evening at the Maggs
Center before a crowd of 110. The 29-31, 15-30, 29-31 loss ends
Salisbury's 12 match win streak and is the first loss at home for
the Sea Gulls this season.
Salisbury (19-6) trailed 7-13 in the first set when junior
Stacey Krebs scored three straight kills to cut
the lead to three, 10-13. Krebs knotted the game at 16 after she
served up two aces. Christopher Newport (17-5) regained the lead
down the stretch as the two teams battled back-and-forth. The
Captains scored the final two points to win the first set, 31-29.
The Captains carried their momentum into the second set where
they started out strong and played very stingy defense to defeat
SU, 30-15.
Salisbury led 28-21 in the third set but let the set slip away
as CNU rallied to win 31-29.
Krebs finished the match with 15 kills and 15 digs. Sophomore
Rachel Downes knocked down 11 kills while fellow
sophomore Gabby Long made 20 digs. Freshman
Melissa Stansbury recorded 10 digs and five kills
in the loss.
This is only the second time this season the Sea Gulls have been
shutout. Elizabethtown College beat SU 3-0 on September 8.
Salisbury will look to regroup next Wednesday, October 10, when the
maroon and gold head north to York, Pa., to face the Spartans in a
CAC match.
