Sterling wins it for Salisbury in overtime

SALISBURY, Md. - Sophomore Kyle Sterling blasted his fourth game-winning goal this season with 50 seconds left in the second overtime period to lift Salisbury University past Capital Athletic Conference rival University of Mary Washington 1-0 on Saturday afternoon before 500 fans at the SU Soccer Complex.

Sterling, the CAC Athlete of the Week, was set-up on an assist pass from senior midfielder Zach Grubb. Sterling was on the left side of the Eagles' goal, about 10 yards out, when he unleashed a powerful kick off his left foot. The shot deflected off of UMW goalie Emmett Rutkowski's hand into the back of the net for the game-winner at the 109 minute. The Salisbury bench erupted in celebration as they mobbed Sterling on the field.

Sterling has scored eight goals for the season and the forward has recorded at least one goal in the past four games. He also has three consecutive game-winning goals, four overall for the season. He leads the team in points with 21 points (eight goals, five assists).

Salisbury (8-3-1, 4-0 CAC) got yet another superb game from its defense as they only allowed eight shots (three on goal) the entire contest. Sea Gull goalie Greg Wellinghoff (6-1) earned his fourth straight shutout victory with three saves. The sophomore has now gone 398 minutes of play without giving up a goal. The streak spans five games.  

Rutowski (seven saves) kept the Eagles (8-4, 3-2) alive with a diving save at the 74 minute mark which denied a Chris Finney header off of an Alex Hargrove indirect kick. The Gulls also had a Sterling shot slapped away in the closing minutes of the second overtime before the game-winner.

The contest was very physical with 48 fouls committed and eight total yellow cards handed out by both teams combined. The Sea Gulls were also got whistled for nine offside penalties. Salisbury outshot Mary Washington 14-8 and led the Eagles in corner kicks, 9-6.

With the win SU remains in first place of the conference at 4-0 and the maroon and gold are still unbeaten at home, 5-0-1, this season.

The Sea Gulls will host Villa Julie College on Wednesday, October 10, at 4 p.m. in a CAC game.
