SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 3 Salisbury University
field hockey team captured its 13th consecutive Capital Athletic
Conference championship Saturday afternoon with a 5-0 win over St.
Mary's (Md.) College at Sea Gull Stadium in front of a crowd of
400.
The top-seed Sea Gulls (18-1) came out on fire as they scored
four goals in the first half to stun the second-seed Seahawks. The
first goal of the game came off the stick of senior Ashley
Twigg, who recorded her fifth goal of the season, only two
minutes into the contest. Freshman Kandice Hancock
registered the assist and finished with a game-high three assists.
The maroon and gold scored three goals off penalty corners as
sophomore Caitlyn Ruffus added the second SU goal
in the 10th minute off of Hancock's second assist. Ruffus scored
nearly eight minutes later to stretch the SU lead to 3-0 as
sophomore Lauren Correll found her in front of the
cage. Senior Jami Gobao rounded out the first half
scoring barrage with an unassisted goal for the Sea Gulls in the
25th minute. Salisbury led 4-0 at the half.
The Seahawks (12-5) managed only one shot for the game and had
three penalty corners to Salisbury's 13.
Senior goalie Maria Ramoundos (18-0) earned the
win and her sixth shutout of the season. SMC goalie Emily Richards
(12-5) made five saves in the loss.
The final SU goal came in the 61st minute as Correll deflected
home Hancock's shot off a penalty corner to give SU the 5-0
victory. Salisbury is a perfect 12-0 at Sea Gull Stadium and the 18
wins, at this point of the season (after the CAC tournament), is
the most since 2004.
The Sea Gulls will next await the official pairings for the 2007
NCAA Division III field hockey tournament, which will be announced
Sunday night. SU is poised to make its 23rd appearance in 24
seasons.
