SALISBURY, Md. - The sun shined brightly down
on Sea Gull Field as Salisbury University opened up its 2007 home
baseball schedule on a brisk and windy day against Nyack College
(Division II). Even though the temperatures hovered around freezing
and the winds consistently blew from left to right field the
Salisbury offense found a way to stay warm against Nyack and sweep
the Warriors in the doubleheader 17-2, 13-1.
Salisbury (2-1) racked up 17 hits, nine of which were for extra
bases, in the first game where the Sea Gulls exploded for eight
runs in the second inning. Senior third baseman Alex
Vitale had a monster game (3-for-4, five RBI, triple,
double, a stolen base, two runs) which was highlighted with a bases
clearing triple to plate three in the second. Freshman Mike
Celenza laced two doubles in the first game as he scored
twice and added two RBI in his home debut. Senior Bryan
Brainer pitched five innings and got the win to even his
season record at 1-1. Brainer allowed only one hit and struck out
six.
Nyack (0-1) starting pitcher Billy Gleason (0-1) had a solo
homer, but he also suffered the loss on the mound in the Warriors
first game of the season.
In game two, Andrew Baird and Mark
Bostwick provided the much of the Sea Gull offense. Baird
finished with two hits, two RBI, and three runs while Bostwick
jacked a two-run homer to right field in the bottom of the third
inning. Starting pitcher Eric Willey (1-0) enjoyed
the run support as he notched his first win. The sophomore tossed
four innings of one-run baseball and struck out four Warriors.
Salisbury turns right back around to face Stevens Institute of
Technology in a Sunday doubleheader at Sea Gull Field. The first
game will start at Noon
