Bostwick's cycle powers Salisbury past Catholic

SALISBURY, Md. - Junior second baseman Mark Bostwick hit for the cycle on Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Field to lead No. 26 Salisbury University past Catholic University 12-2 in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both teams. The Sea Gulls have now won 11 straight games.

Bostwick homered to straight-away centerfield in his first plate appearance in the bottom of the second inning. He later capped the cycle with a seventh inning triple just over the outstretched glove of junior right fielder Mike Michalski. For the day, Bostwick finished 4-for-5 with two runs and four RBI.

The Sea Gulls (11-1, 1-0 CAC) also received big offensive contributions from senior Alex Vitale and junior Justin Armiger. Vitale connected on his second home run of the season on a line drive to center in the eighth inning. Vitale ended the day with four RBI. Armiger, the designated hitter, had two hits including a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the fourth.

On the mound, senior Dan Oleynik improved to 4-0 as he gave up one run and struck out nine in six innings of work. The Catholic run in the top of the sixth was the first earned run given up by Oleynik all season (29 innings pitched). Drew Campbell, Tom Howell and Eric Willey each threw one inning in relief. The trio combined to allow one run on two hits.

CUA dropped to 5-5 for the season and 0-1 in the conference. Sophomore starting pitcher Matt Voiro fell to 0-2 after he surrendered eight runs in three and two-thirds innings.

Salisbury puts its winning streak on the line at 2 p.m., Monday, March 10, against Route 13 rival Wesley College.
