SU sweeps Gallaudet, Bison score first run in three years against Gulls

SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University baseball team swept Capital Athletic Conference opponent Gallaudet University here Saturday in a doubleheader, 15-0 and 24-1.

Salisbury (19-3, 3-1 CAC) gave up its first run to the Bison (1-10, 0-4 CAC) in over three years in the second game of the twin bill. The Bison scored in the fifth inning when Salvador Acevedo scored from third base on an infield ground out. The Sea Gulls' scoreless streak against the Bison was 147-0 in over 57 innings of play dating back to the 2004 season.

In the first game, Salisbury had three pitchers hurl seven innings of shutout ball. Sophomore Lucas Hanson (1-0) started and pitched three innings to earn his first win of the season. Hanson allowed only two hits and struck out four batters. Freshman Joe Pohlman matched Hanson's output of four strikeouts in three innings of work while allowing one hit. Freshman David Eissner pitched the seventh inning and struck out two of the three Bison batters.

SU spread around the offense in the first game as 10 different batters had a hit, five of whom had multi-hit games.

In the second game, the Sea Gulls scored 12 runs in the first inning behind seven hits and two Gallaudet errors. The inning was highlighted with back-to-back home runs from senior Andrew Jensen (3-for-3, six RBIs) and freshman Mike Celenza.

Salisbury's offense also received solid performances from senior Colin Kraus, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Juniors Randy Boyle (2-for-2, two RBIs, four runs) and Justin Armiger (2-for-4, four RBIs, one run) combined for six RBIs in the game.

Senior left-handed pitcher Matt Peterson (1-0) hurled three scoreless innings as he gave up one hit and struck out two. Freshmen J.D. Polcari and David Eissner closed out the final four innings where they combined for six strikeouts and allowed one run.

Salisbury will host No. 27 Rowan University at 3:00 p.m., Monday, March 26.
