SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 9 Salisbury University
baseball team dropped a heartbreaking game to the University of
Mary Washington here Wednesday on a 13th inning solo home run to
lift the Eagles to a key 4-3 Capital Athletic Conference victory.
Salisbury (22-6, 5-4 CAC) dropped its third straight conference
game in a row and its second consecutive game at Sea Gull Field
where they are now 15-2.
UMW (18-7-1, 7-2 CAC) shortstop Eric Fitzgerald blasted the
game-winning home run off SU reliever Jeff Feigl
(0-1) to break the 3-3 deadlock. The Sea Gulls had two runners on
base with one out in the bottom half of the 13th inning but UMW
pitcher Wes Hayden (6-1) shut the door on the Gulls as he retired
seniors Andrew Jensen and Alex
Vitale.
Salisbury was the first to score as it capitalized on Mary
Washington miscues in the fourth inning. Junior Mark
Bostwick reached on a fielding error and later scored on
Brian Camper's single. A second run crossed the
plate when Eagle starter Brett Diamond uncorked a wild pitch that
allowed SU catcher Pete Callahan to score and give
the Gulls a 2-0 lead.
Diamond surrendered only one earned run, which came in the sixth
inning, as junior designated hitter Justin Armiger
sent a shot over the centerfield fence to increase the SU lead to
3-1.
The Eagles answered with two runs in the seventh inning off
Salisbury starting pitcher Ryan Bennick. The first
was a solo homer by Chris Anderson and the second was an RBI single
by Alex Rossi that plated Justin Marsh. Bennick, who would not
factor into the decision, finished with six strikeouts and allowed
only four hits in 6.1 innings of work.
Salisbury had 14 hits in the loss, led by senior Colin Kraus who
went 4-for-6 at the plate, and left 16 runners on base. The Sea
Gulls used four different pitchers in relief.
The Sea Gulls will complete its home-and-home series with UMW on
the road Saturday, April 14 to complete the CAC regular-season
schedule. The CAC tournament will begin next week.
