Box Score CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Top-ranked Salisbury
University held onto the Charles B. Clark Cup with a 13-5 men's
lacrosse victory over No. 16 Washington College before 2,329 at
Kibler Field at Roy Kirby Jr. Stadium.
Salisbury
(19-0) finishes its best regular-season in school history with 19
wins and will take a 62-game unbeaten regular-season streak into
the 2008 season. SU has won the last seven meetings between its
Eastern Shore rival, including the last five regular-season games,
in the series referred to as the "War on the Shore." SU leads the
series 21-19.
SU broke open the game in the second quarter after the two teams
were knotted at two apiece. The Sea Gulls went on a 5-0 run to take
a 7-2 lead into the half.
Senior Matt Dasinger and junior Matt
Hickman (three goals, one assist) led the Sea Gulls with
three goals apiece. Sophomore Kylor Berkman (two
goals, two assists) netted his two goals of the game in the
decisive second quarter. Senior Eric Bishop and
junior Greg Titus were the two other Gulls to net
two goals in the game.
SU outshot Washington 38-19, won 16-of-19 faceoffs, scooped up
39 groundballs and was 25-of-29 on clears. The Sea Gulls also
assisted on nine of their 13 goals.
Washington (10-5) was led offensively by junior attackman Chris
Read who scored two second half goals. Shoremen goalie Gordon Cohen
made 14 saves in the game while SU netminder Max
Zarchin made seven stops.
WC pulled to within five, 10-5, on Read's second mark of the
night at the 6:48 mark in the fourth quarter. SU then scored three
goals in a minute to put the game away with three minutes to play.
Hickman scored two goals back-to-back in 23 seconds.
The Sea Gulls have never lost a Charles B. Clark Cup since it
was first rewarded in 2004. The cup is awarded annually to the
regular-season winner of the Salisbury-Washington men's lacrosse
game in memory of Coach Charles B. Clark, who served with
distinction at both schools.
Salisbury will now wait for the NCAA Division III tournament
selections which will be announced on Sunday, May 6. The first
round begins on Wednesday, March 9.
