SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 9 Salisbury University
baseball pitching staff, one of the top staffs in the entire
country, shut down the fourth ranked offense as the Sea Gulls
jolted No. 16 Johns Hopkins University 21-6 here Tuesday afternoon.
Salisbury (30-7) poured on the runs early and often. The maroon
and gold scored at least one run in the first six innings
highlighted by five runs in the first, fifth and sixth innings. SU
pounded out 20 hits which included four doubles and two home runs.
The Sea Gulls surpass the 30-win plateau for the second year in
a row and the sixth time under the guidance of Coach Doug Fleetwood
in his seven-year tenure.
Freshman Hunter Wessells hit a single, home run
(first of the season) and a double in his first three at bats. The
designated hitter finished 3-for-5, scored three runs and stole his
seventh base. Fellow freshman Mike Celenza went
3-for-4 at the plate, knocked in four runs and scored three times.
Senior Andrew Jensen, one of the top hitters in
the country, went 3-for-5, knocked in his 50th and 51st RBIs on the
season and scored twice. Juniors Justin Armiger
(3-for-4) and Mark Bostwick (2-for-3) had solid
games at the dish. Armiger scored five times and Bostwick knocked
in four runs. Senior catcher Pete Callahan
(2-for-5) slammed his third home run of the season, a three-run
shot, in the fifth inning and plated five runs on the afternoon.
Third baseman Alex Vitale went 2-for-2 at the
plate and scored four runs and knocked in one. Center fielder
Colin Kraus had two hits and scored once and
knocked one run in. Every SU starter had two or more hits in the
win except one. SU entered the game ranked fifth in the nation in
runs scored (10).
On the mound, junior Ryan Bennick (7-1) went
three and two-thirds to earn the win. Bennick struck out seven,
walked five and allowed two runs on three hits. The combination of
Drew Campbell and Eric Willey
finished out the game for SU on the mound.
JHU (29-8) scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings
followed by a run in the sixth and seventh. The Blue Jays used
seven different pitchers in the loss. The Blue Jays entered the
game fourth in the country in runs scored (10.1) and fourth in
batting average. Johns Hopkins only had eight hits in 34 at-bats
(.235).
Salisbury is off for a week before hosting No. 29 Methodist
University (N.C.) in a doubleheader on Monday, May 7. The first
nine-inning game will begin at Noon at Sea Gull Field.
