SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 10 Salisbury
University baseball team finished its regular-season schedule with
a 14-9 non-conference loss to Montclair State University here
Thursday at Sea Gull Field. The loss ended Salisbury's 10-game win
streak.
The two teams went into the ninth inning tied at nine when the
Red Hawk bats came alive. The Sea Gulls (32-8) gave up five runs
and went quietly in the bottom half of the inning as the maroon and
gold went down in order. Sophomore Eric Willey
(3-1) suffered his first of the season as MSU (22-18) roughed up
the reliever for eight runs in the final two innings.
Salisbury, the nation's top-ranked pitching staff, struggled
with Montclair State as the Gulls sent six pitchers to the hill
where they gave up 15 hits, including four home runs. MSU outscored
Salisbury 13-2 in the final four innings. The Red Hawks scored five
runs in the sixth and ninth innings.
MSU outfielder Thomas Meyer hit two home runs, in back-to-back
at-bats in the sixth and eighth innings. Fellow teammates Andrew
Vicaro and Michael Nunes also went yard for the Hawks.
SU jumped out early as freshman Mike Celenza
clubbed a three-run home run in the four-run first inning for the
Gulls. SU tacked on another three runs in the second inning to take
a commanding 7-0 lead. SU senior Andrew Jensen
(2-for-4, one RBI) and junior Justin Armiger
(2-for-5, four RBIs) combined to drive in five of the Gulls' nine
runs. Freshmen Hunter Wessels went 3-for-4 and
scored twice.
The game lasted nearly four hours and saw a combined nine

six errors. This was the third time this season these two teams met
and the first loss for Salisbury. The Sea Gulls swept the two-game
March series with the Red Hawks where SU outscored MSU 29-11.
Since this was the final home game of the regular-season the
team paid tribute to their seniors before the start of the game.
