Red Hawks ruffle Sea Gull bullpen for 14 runs

SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 10 Salisbury University baseball team finished its regular-season schedule with a 14-9 non-conference loss to Montclair State University here Thursday at Sea Gull Field. The loss ended Salisbury's 10-game win streak.

The two teams went into the ninth inning tied at nine when the Red Hawk bats came alive. The Sea Gulls (32-8) gave up five runs and went quietly in the bottom half of the inning as the maroon and gold went down in order. Sophomore Eric Willey (3-1) suffered his first of the season as MSU (22-18) roughed up the reliever for eight runs in the final two innings.

Salisbury, the nation's top-ranked pitching staff, struggled with Montclair State as the Gulls sent six pitchers to the hill where they gave up 15 hits, including four home runs. MSU outscored Salisbury 13-2 in the final four innings. The Red Hawks scored five runs in the sixth and ninth innings.

MSU outfielder Thomas Meyer hit two home runs, in back-to-back at-bats in the sixth and eighth innings. Fellow teammates Andrew Vicaro and Michael Nunes also went yard for the Hawks.

SU jumped out early as freshman Mike Celenza clubbed a three-run home run in the four-run first inning for the Gulls. SU tacked on another three runs in the second inning to take a commanding 7-0 lead. SU senior Andrew Jensen (2-for-4, one RBI) and junior Justin Armiger (2-for-5, four RBIs) combined to drive in five of the Gulls' nine runs. Freshmen Hunter Wessels went 3-for-4 and scored twice.

The game lasted nearly four hours and saw a combined nine pitchers, 77 at-bats, 25 hits, 23 runs scored, five home runs and six errors. This was the third time this season these two teams met and the first loss for Salisbury. The Sea Gulls swept the two-game March series with the Red Hawks where SU outscored MSU 29-11.

Since this was the final home game of the regular-season the team paid tribute to their seniors before the start of the game. This year's senior class includes; Tom Howell, Matt Peterson, Pete Callahan, Dan Oleynik, Bryan Brainer, Colin Kraus, Brian Theibault, Alex Vitale and Jensen.

Salisbury will now await the official NCAA announcement of the 2007 Division III baseball tournament. The regional assignments will be announced on Monday, May 14. SU has made seven straight NCAA appearances, 12 overall in the program's history.
