RADNOR, Pa. - The Salisbury University women's
soccer team kicked off its season Friday afternoon with a 4-1
victory over Rowan University in the first day of the 2007 Cabrini
College Invitational. Salisbury (1-0) jumped out to an early
lead where the maroon and gold led 3-0 at the half and later tacked
on a fourth goal to secure the win. All four goals were scored by
SU seniors.
SU senior Kate Weaver picked up where she left
off last year when she was the leading scorer for the Sea Gulls
with 20 goals. Weaver scored the first goal of the 2007 season for
Gulls just over 13 minutes (13:19) into the match. Fellow senior
Robyn Bishop scored her first goal of the game
three minutes later (16:20) off an assist from freshman
Sarah Koenig. Senior Erin Casey
scored the third goal on the afternoon at the 35th minute (34:24)
mark as junior midfielder Christina Eury was credited with an
assist to send SU into the half up 3-0.
Salisbury continued to control the game in the second half as
Bishop netted her second goal on the day at the 53:33 mark off a
Weaver assist. Bishop finished the game with a game-high four
points.
Junior goalkeepers Gena Goodson and
Kristin Greene split a half each in the net for
the Gulls. Goodson saved all five Rowan
shots kicked her way in the first half. Greene
allowed only one of three shots to sneak by her in the second half.
The Profs (0-1) scored their lone goal in the 76th minute off a
breakaway goal by Alicia Kavlunas.
Salisbury returns to action tomorrow to face the host school,
Cabrini, at Noon. This will be the third time the two teams have
met and the first time since 1995. Salisbury holds a 2-0 series
advantage.
