Box Score 1 RALEIGH, N.C. - The Salisbury University men's
soccer team lost both games by the same 2-1 margin at the Esprit
D-III Soccer Classic in Raleigh, N.C. The Sea Gulls lost to
Lynchburg College on Sunday and Guilford College edged out SU on
Saturday with a penalty kick goal in the final minutes of play.
Salisbury (2-2-1) lost its second consecutive game when
Lynchburg (4-1) rallied after falling behind early. The Sea Gulls
jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when Scott
Sparrow banged a shot into the upper left corner of the
goal. Kyle Sterling earned his sixth point of the
season as he recorded the assist on SU's lone strike.
The Hornets scored two unanswered goals the rest of the game to
close out the Gulls, 2-1. LC got goals from Josh Reed and Shawn
Bender while assists were recorded by Cam Smith and Matt Dunnum,
respectively. The maroon and gold were outshot for the first-time
all year as they only managed four shots to Lynchburg's five.
SU lost its first game of the tournament on Saturday afternoon
against Guilford College as the Quakers won 2-1. Guilford scored
its game-winning goal in the 87th minute on a penalty kick
converted by Scott Meguid (one goal, one assist).
The Sea Gulls knotted the game at 1-1 in the 57th minute with
Sterling's second goal of the season off of a Ryan
Chacon assist. The Gulls once again struggled to convert
as they attempted 13 shots compared to four by Guilford.
Senior goalie Matt Blue (2-2-1) suffered his
first loss of the season against the Quakers. Blue entered the game
with a 290-minute scoreless streak which got snapped 30 minutes
into the game against Guilford.
Salisbury has a week off before hosting Randolph-Macon on
Saturday at the SU Soccer Complex at 2 p.m. in a non-conference
game
