SALISBURY, Md. - Senior Danielle
Twilley cleared the ball 75-yards to run out the final
seconds of Tuesday's Salisbury University field hockey game to
secure a 2-1 victory for the No. 5 Sea Gulls over No. 12 Rowan
University before 130 at Sea Gull Stadium.
The Profs (4-3) pressured the Sea Gull goal during the final 15
minutes trying to knot the game at two apiece but the SU defense
stood its ground to preserve the eighth consecutive win for the
maroon and goal.
Salisbury (9-1) scored the game's first two goals in the first
half in a span of six minutes. Senior back Kristina
Holland slammed home her first goal of the season off a
penalty corner pass from sophomore Michelle Rowe
at the 12 minute mark.
The Sea Gulls struck again at the 18 minute mark as freshman
Abby Tedford scored an unassisted goal as she beat
Rowan goalie Amanda Cucinotti (12 saves) to the right corner of the
cage. The goal was Tedford's third of the season.
Rowan halted the SU momentum with an unassisted goal off the
stick of Rachel Cheafsky 24 minutes into the game. Cheafsky is now
tied for the team lead in goals with five scored.
SU outshot Rowan 10-5 as the Sea Gulls took the 2-1 lead into
the half.
In the second half, the two teams played equal as they each had
six penalty corners, both goalies made four saves and Rowan held a
slight 6-5 advantage in shots.
Senior goalie Maria Ramoundos made six saves in
the win for the Sea Gulls and is now 9-0 this season in the cage
for SU.
Salisbury will host No. 4 Messiah College on Friday at 5 p.m. at
Sea Gull Stadium in another nationally ranked game. SU is now 7-0
at home.
