Sea Gulls blow out Golden Eagles in second half

BROCKPORT, N.Y. - Salisbury University broke open Saturday's football contest with SUNY Brockport in the second half as the Sea Gulls outscored the host Golden Eagles 23-0 en route to a 40-14 victory before a crowd of 2,000 at Special Olympics Stadium.

This was the Atlantic Central Football Conference opener for both teams and the first game of the 2007 season for SUNY Brockport.

SU (2-0, 1-0 ACFC) took advantage of SUNY Brockport's defense in the second half as junior quarterback Ronnie Curley scored a touchdown on a 56-yard run and threw for a touchdown in the third quarter as the game turned in Salisbury's favor.

Curley finished the day with 75 yards rushing on 10 carries and one touchdown while he was 3-for-7 for 76 yards and a touchdown through the air. Curley began the second half scoring spree with a four play, 69-yard drive that ended with the signal caller running in from 56 yards out to give SU a 24-14 lead at the 10:07 mark.

SUNY Brockport (0-1, 0-1 ACFC) tried to answer as the Golden Eagles drove down to the Salisbury 25-yard-line but junior quarterback Zack Luke (16-for-27, 169 yards) got picked off by SU's Antione Cuff in the end zone.

The Sea Gulls marched the other direction down the field on a seven play, 80-yard drive which ended with Curley hitting Kevin Tillage for a 47-yard touchdown pass with 2:18 left in the quarter.

SU senior kicker Brendan Kincaid tacked on his second field goal of the day, from 37 yards out, to begin the fourth quarter for the Gulls. Junior Shelby Fisher scored his second touchdown on the day as he rumbled in from six yards out to cap the scoring for the maroon and gold with less then five minutes in the game. Kincaid missed his first point after attempt for the first time ever in a SU uniform to snap a streak of 33-for-33 over three seasons.

SU rushed for 293 yards as a team and compiled 134 passing yards for a total of 427 yards of offense compared to Brockport's 301 total (132 rushing, 169 passing). The time of possession was pretty even but SU committed double the amount of penalties compared to SUNY Brockport as the Gulls had 10 penalties for 103 yards. Salisbury was a perfect 5-for-5 in the red zone.

SU captain Chris Loveland led all tacklers with 10 total tackles (four solo, six assists). The Gulls had three sacks; one each from Matt Barnes, Jarrell Chandler and Paul Cynewski. Junior defensive back Justin Acker had an interception and returned it for 17 yards in the win.

Salisbury struck first on its first drive as the Gulls went 46 yards in less then three minutes to score a touchdown as Fisher scored from three yards out. The Golden Eagles answered right before the end of the first quarter as Matt McCormick (105 yards) scored on a 23-yard run for the first of his two first half touchdowns.

In the second quarter, SU regained the lead on a Ronnie Shockley (81 yards) 12-yard run into the Golden Eagle end zone at the 11:30 mark. SUNY Brockport knotted the game at 14 on McCormick's second score with 7:18 left before the half. Kincaid booted home a 29-yard field goal to send the Gulls into the half up, 17-14.

Salisbury will travel to Newport News, Va., next Saturday afternoon (1 p.m.) to face nationally ranked Christopher Newport University in a key non-conference game.
