NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Salisbury University and
Christopher Newport University, two of the top men's soccer teams
in the Division III South Region, squared off Wednesday evening in
a key game where the two squads came away with a 1-1 double
overtime draw.
Salisbury (10-3-2) trailed 1-0 at the half before the Sea Gulls
tied the game at the 53:48 mark in the second half. Sophomore
midfielder Ben DeLisle scored his sixth goal of
the season off an assist from senior midfielder Scott
Sparrow. The Sea Gulls had a chance to win the match late
but a go-ahead goal was called off due to an offsides penalty.
Junior goalie Greg Wellinghoff made four saves
in the net for the Sea Gulls while his counterpart junior Matt
Tengs stopped no SU shots.
CNU (11-3-2), ranked fourth in the region a spot above
Salisbury, scored the game's first goal in the 31st minute when
Clif Kipper scored off an assist from David Haas.
SU will travel to Frederick, Md., on Saturday, October 18, for a
Capital Athletic Conference game with Hood College at 3 p.m.
