Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The No.
19 Salisbury University men's soccer team advanced to the 2008
Capital Athletic Conference championship on Wednesday afternoon
with a 4-1 road victory over University of Mary Washington in the
semifinal round.
Salisbury (14-3-3), who is the third seed, will host fourth-seed
Wesley College in the CAC championship this Saturday. The
Wolverines advanced to the championship game as they defeated
top-seed and No. 2 ranked York (Pa.) College in a penalty kick
shootout, 3-0. Wesley was victorious despite being outshot 40-3 as
the two teams were tied 0-0 after 110 minutes of play.
The Sea Gulls wasted no time against the Eagles as sophomore
forward Mike Napolitano headed home a Greg
Taylor pass 10 minutes into the game. Sophomore forward
Ben DeLisle responded eight minutes later as he
beat Mary Washington goalkeeper Emmett Rutkowski (two saves) on a
one-on-one fast break to give SU an early 2-0 lead. The goal marked
DeLisle's team-leading 10th goal of the season and his fifth in the
past five games.
Freshman forward Sam Forline scored SU's
third unanswered goal when he headed in a Justin
McGrath pass from the right side 31 minutes into the game.
The Sea Gulls were a perfect 3-for-3 on their goal shots to begin
the game. UMW's Tony Rodriguez scored the Eagles' only goal with 35
seconds left before the half. Salisbury led 3-1 at the break.
In the second half, junior midfielder Kyle
Sterling capped the scoring for Salisbury on an unassisted
blast, which was his ninth tally of the season, in the 55th minute.
SU junior goalie Greg Wellinghoff (two saves)
improved his record to 12-2-3 with the victory. Mary Washington
outshot Salisbury 9-8 and also held a 6-3 advantage in corner
kicks.
Salisbury will host the CAC championship game on Saturday for
the second consecutive year. SU is looking to avenge a 3-2 loss to
the Wolverines on October 1. The Sea Gulls captured their sixth CAC
title, since 1999, last season when they defeated York 2-0 in the
title game.
