NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Sophomore Beth
Rhodey had a career-game for the No. 3 Salisbury
University women's lacrosse team on Tuesday afternoon as the Sea
Gulls won 19-5 on the road against Christopher Newport University
in a non-conference game. Rhodey's six goals were more than the
five the Captains (0-1) scored against the Sea Gulls (2-0). She
finished the day with eight points as she assisted on two first
half goals.
Salisbury scored the game's first five goals, two on free
position shots, to take an early 5-0 lead less then 12 minutes into
the opening half. CNU got on the board at the 12:24 mark as Katie
Doherty (one goal, three assists) found Lisa Thomson (one goal, one
assist) for the goal. Rhodey and senior Sue
Ackermann (three goals, two assists) took over from there
and scored five of the next seven Sea Gull goals. SU led 12-1 at
the half.
CNU scored the first goal of the second half and sprinkled in
three more goals in the final 30 minutes as Salisbury scored five
unanswered down the stretch to put the game away.
Juniors Jess Chmielewski (two goals, three
assists), Robyn Bishop (two goals), Holly
Johnson (two goals) and freshman Logan
Bilderback (two goals) all scored at least one goal in the
second half. Seniors Alexis Morrell (one goal) and
Jessica Liston (one goal, one assist) both added
first half goals. Sophomore Kim Cudmore added an
assist in the win.
SU was 6-for-10 on free position shots, scooped up 12 ground
balls, won 9-of-25 draw controls and outshot CNU 32-21. Junior
goalie Sonja Stuart (2-0) earned her second win
this season as she started and made eight saves in 47 minutes.
Freshman goalie Julie Ann Caulfield finished the
game for the maroon and gold where she made one save and allowed
one goal.
The Sea Gulls will next be in action on Saturday, February 23,
as they host Randolph-Macon College in a non-conference 3 p.m. tilt
at Sea Gull Stadium.
