GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The No. 1 ranked Salisbury
University men's lacrosse team survived a near scare against No. 2
Gettysburg College at Musselman Stadium as the Sea Gulls overcame a
five-goal halftime deficit Saturday to storm back and win 11-8
before a crowd of 3,550.
The two top-ranked teams were led into action by the two most
winningest active coaches in collegiate men's lacrosse history as
Salisbury's Jim Berkman and Gettysburg's Hank
Janczyk, who after today's game moved to 319-35 (90 percent win
percentage) and 305-92 (77 percent win percentage), respectively,
faced each other in another epic game. Janczyk coached at SU for
three seasons (1983-85). The all-time winningest coach in men's
lacrosse history is retired Army coach Jack Emmer (326 wins).
The second half was all Sea Gulls (11-0) as they scored nine of
the game's final 10 goals. SU outshot GC 12-6 outscored the Bullets
5-0 in the decisive fourth quarter. Salisbury dominated Gettysburg
(8-1) at face-offs in the second half as the combination of
Ryan Brown and Ryan Finch won
10-of-12 face-offs against the Bullets.
Junior goalie Zach Krissoff (10 saves) stepped
up in the second half as he made seven spectacular saves to keep
Salisbury in the game and allow the maroon and gold to make their
comeback. Krissoff took over in the net for fellow junior
Riley Clark (0 saves) who got pulled nine minutes
into the first quarter.
The stingy SU defense prevented Gettysburg star Joe Brody from
extending his 21-game scoring streak.
SU has won 34 consecutive games since the beginning of the 2007
season. The win also extends the Sea Gulls' regular season streak
of 73 straight games. The Gulls and Bullets locked up twice in
2007, as the last meeting came in the NCAA tournament semifinal
round in which Salisbury defeated the Bullets 9-6.
Salisbury scored the game's first goal as senior and team
goal-leader Matt Hickman got SU on the board 2:17
into the game. The Gulls could not sustain the momentum, however,
as they allowed the Bullets to rattle off six consecutive goals in
a 13 minute stretch. The Bullets led 6-1 before SU sophomore
Mike Von Kamecke (four goals) broke the drought
with 5:44 left to play in the first half with an unassisted goal.
Gettysburg answered back in 50 seconds with its seventh goal as the
Bullets sent the Sea Gulls into the half down 7-2.
The Sea Gull comeback was aided by senior Bruce
Richardson (two goals, one assist), junior Stephen
Krasco (one goal, one assist) and sophomore Jake
DeLillo (one goal, one assist) along with seniors
Greg Titus and Kyle Burto, who
scored a goal each. Richardson stuck the eventual game-winner by
Gettysburg goalie Zachary Furshman (13 saves) with four minutes to
play. SU scored four goals, two from Von Kamecke, in a two-minute
span in the fourth quarter.
Gettysburg was led by Ben Sufrin (three goals, one assist) who
scored the Bullets' final goal with 4:23 to play in the third
quarter. GC attacker Trip Dyer (two goals, one assist) recorded a
three-point game to go along with teammate Drew Duckworth's two
goals.
Salisbury looks to keep its win streaks alive Wednesday, April
2, as the Sea Gulls travel to Fredericksburg, Va., to take on
University of Mary Washington at 4 p.m.
