YORK, Pa. - Junior Randy Boyle
broke the Salisbury University baseball team record for consecutive
games with a hit as the second baseman had at least one hit in
Sunday's doubleheader with York (Pa.) College on the road. Boyle
has hit safely in all 25 games this season for Salisbury.
The No. 8 Sea Gulls swept the season series with the Spartans
with a 3-2 seven-inning win and a 12-1 nine-inning victory.
Salisbury (24-1, 11-0 CAC) has won 24 straight games, the longest
streak in the nation, and stands in first place of the conference.
York (Pa.) College drops to 5-18 overall and 4-8 in the CAC.
Salisbury's streak could had ended in game one vs. the Spartans
but junior transfer Jordan Crystal made a diving
catch in center field in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the
York threat. The Spartans had already plated one run in the sixth
and had runners at first and second before Crystal came up with the
game-saving catch.
Salisbury scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to
regain the lead 3-1. Boyle got things going in the fourth with an
infield hit. He later came around to score Salisbury's first run of
the game. SU later loaded the bases as senior catcher Tyler
Riley stepped to the plate. Riley lifted a fly ball to
right field but York right fielder Dennis Maxim dropped the ball
and allowed Mike Celenza and Andrew
Miller to score and give the Gulls a 3-1 lead.
SU starting pitcher Eric Willey (5-0) picked up
the win as he went the distance and allowed two runs (one earned)
on seven hits as he walked one and struck out three. York starter
Jason Christenberry (0-5) suffered the loss as he surrendered three
unearned runs on three hits, walked three and struck out four.
Boyle's hit in game one broke the old Salisbury record of 23 set
by former All-American Greg Lemon at the end of the 2006 season.
In the second game, Salisbury scored two runs in the first and
broke open a 3-0 game in the sixth and seventh innings with four
and five runs, respectively. The 7-0 lead after six innings was
enough for Sea Gull starter Ryan Bennick to pick
up his seventh victory this season. He allowed no runs on six hits,
walked two and stuck out four. Jeff Feigl (two
innings) and Kyle Judson (one inning) closed out
the game for the Sea Gulls.
Four Sea Gulls had two hits in the win they include; Boyle,
Miller, designated hitter Matt O'Keefe and right
fielder Brian Camper. Miller led all Sea Gulls
with three runs scored as O'Keefe knocked in a game-high three
runs. O'Keefe, Camper and left fielder Mark
Bostwick scored twice in the 11-run win.
Salisbury will next host St. Mary's (Md.) College on Wednesday,
April 2, at 2:30 p.m. for a CAC game.
