NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Salisbury University
women's tennis team closed out its regular-season schedule with a
huge win over Christopher Newport University in a match
against two Atlantic South region ranked teams. The Sea Gulls
started strong and finished with a 6-3 road win to hand the
Captains their second loss of the season on Tuesday.
Salisbury (15-4), the region's No. 13 team, were able to upset
Christopher Newport (18-2), ranked No. 11 in the region, with
a balanced performance from the entire team. The Atlantic South
Region's No. 7 doubles team of junior Anna Marie
Kable and sophomore Jackie Burr earned a
tough 8-6 victory over the region's No. 15 team Stefanie Leblang
and Lindsey Pantele, to set the stage for SU. The Gulls went on to
claim a 2-1 advantage at the conclusion of doubles play as
sophomores Kelly Fahrner and Rachel
Iosue earned an 8-3 win in match No. 3.
The Sea Gulls won four of the six singles matches to claim their
15th victory of the season which the highest win total for SU under
the guidance of coach Randy Halfpap. In 2002, the
Sea Gulls were 14-4. Last season, the Gulls were 13-8.
Iosue had a convincing 6-2, 6-0 victory at third singles
while junior Robyn Wendell battled to a hard
earned point at fourth singles. Wendell won 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-2 to
beat Lisa Dyke. Burr and junior Hannah
Parsons finished out singles play with wins at No. 5 and
No. 6 singles. Burr won 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 while Parsons won 7-5,
6-0.
CNU earned points at first and second singles. Pantele defeated
Kable 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles while Frannie Shivar beat Fahrner
6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.
Salisbury will return to the courts tomorrow (Thursday, April
17) in the semifinal round of the Capital Athletic Conference
tournament against St. Mary's (Md.) College at 3:30 p.m.
