Six-run first inning too much for Wolverines to handle, SU wins 27th straight

SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 6 Salisbury University baseball team toppled Wesley College, 7-2, Monday afternoon in a Capital Athletic Conference game thanks to a second consecutive complete game by freshman starter Dustin Herbert

The left-handed Herbert (8-0) struck out six Wolverine batters and allowed six hits in his eighth consecutive victory for the Gulls. The two earned runs Herbert allowed in the game, one in the first and second innings, brought his season total to seven in 55.2 innings pitched to equal an 1.13 ERA. His 54 strikeouts leads the team. In his last outing, Herbert pitched a one-hitter against St. Mary's (Md.) College in a 7-0 win. The two runs scored today snaps a string of 24 scoreless innings for the 6-foot-2 freshman.

Offensively, the Sea Gulls (27-1, 13-0 CAC) jumped on Wesley starter Bryan Jennings (3-2) in the bottom half of the first inning as SU scored six runs before the Wolverines could record an out. Rick Croshaw came on in relief for WC (23-10, 10-8 CAC) and threw six innings where he allowed two hits and one earned run.

The Gulls' 27th consecutive victory, a nation's best, took a team effort as no Sea Gull batter recorded multiple hits in a game that saw as many SU hits as it did runs. Senior Tyler Riley (1-for-3, two RBIs) was the lone Gull to knock in multiple teammates as he smashed a two-run double to left center field in the first to score seniors Mark Bostwick (1-for-2) and Justin Armiger (1-for-4, RBI).

Junior Randy Boyle (1-for-5, RBI) reached base safely in his 28th consecutive game, as he reached on one of Wesley's three errors on the day in the first. Then in the bottom of the third inning Boyle singled off Croshaw to right field which scored Riley to put an insurance run on the board for SU.

The maroon and gold will get little rest as they are set to make up Sunday's doubleheader with St. Mary's (Md.) College tomorrow (Tuesday, April 8) at 1 p.m. on the road. The first game will resume in the top of the third inning with the Sea Gulls up 5-0.
