ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The No. 5 Salisbury
University baseball team swept Capital Athletic Conference opponent
St. Mary's (Md.) College 11-4 and 12-0 in a rescheduled
doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. The victory extended Salisbury's
nation leading win streak to 29 games as the Sea Gulls get set for
a three-game series with fellow CAC rival University of
Mary Washington.
Salisbury (29-1, 15-0 CAC) started the two-game contest with the
Seahawks last Sunday (April 6) and took a 5-0 lead in game one that
was eventually rained out. The Gulls resumed
play Tuesday and continued their offensive success.
The Sea Gulls had 14 hits in each game this afternoon and
totaled 33 runs. Senior Mark Bostwick went 3-for-7
over the two-game stretch with three RBI. Junior Randy
Boyle went 4-for-10 on the day with three RBI. Boyle has
now reached base safely in all 30 games this season for
SU. Sophomore Mike Celenza knocked
in five RBI in game two and went on to finish the series
5-for-10 with six RBI.
Two Sea Gull pitchers remained perfect on the day as senior
Ryan Bennick (8-0) threw a complete game shutout
in game two, as he allowed five hits and recorded
nine strikeouts.
Junior Lucas Hanson threw the majority of the
first game as he went four innings with four strikeouts, four hits
and two earned runs to earn the win. Fellow junior Eric
Willey started the game two days ago but only pitched two
innings of the seven inning game. A starting pitcher in a
seven-inning game needs to go four innings to earn the win.
The maroon and gold will square-off with the Mary
Washington for three straight contests with a single
nine-inning contest tomorrow (Wednesday, April 9) in
Fredericksburg, Va., and then again on Saturday, April 12, as the
Gulls host the Eagles for a doubleheader at Noon.
