Sea Gulls drop opener, Carnegie Mellon scores twice early on

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Salisbury University women's soccer team fell 2-1 to Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) University on a hot and humid Saturday afternoon in Virginia Beach, Va., on the first day of the Orthopedic Associates of Virginia Classic.

Salisbury (0-1) allowed two goals in the first 20 minutes of play and could not recover. Junior Dana Passucci took the rebounded shot from Samantha Asch and scored the Sea Gulls' lone goal at the 18:27 mark in the first half. Salisbury was held scoreless for the final 71 minutes.

CMU forward Valerie Corvino notched the first goal of the game 13 minutes into the game. Forward Abigail Coffin extended the Tartans' lead to 2-0 with a goal just minutes later off an assist from Corvino (five shots, four on goal).

SU goalie Gena Goodson made seven saves in the game but the Tartans (1-0) were resilient as they recorded 12 shots in the game, 10 on goal.

SU struggled to capitalize on its four corner kick opportunities and only managed four shots on goal (10 shots total) for the contest. CMU goalie Katy Olesnavage made three saves in the victory.

The Sea Gulls return to action tomorrow (Sunday, August 31) at 1 p.m. when the maroon and gold face the Golden Flyers of Nazareth College.
