Box Score 2 SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 3 Salisbury University
field hockey team put on an impressive performance on Saturday in
the first day of the SU Invitational. The Sea Gulls (4-0) recorded
back-to-back shutouts against Denison University and SUNY
Brockport. Salisbury won the morning contest with Denison, 7-0, and
followed that with a 4-0 win over the Golden Eagles in the
afternoon.
Salisbury was led by junior All-American Lauren
Correll who scored three goals in the two games combined.
Correll led the maroon and gold attack against the Golden Eagles
(3-3) with two goals. Sophomore Kandice Hancock
scored a goal in each game and added an assist on Correll's first
goal against Brockport. In addition to Hancock and Correll's goals,
freshman Paige Lowrey scored the first goal of the
second half against Brockport to give SU a 3-0 lead.
SU outshot its two opponents 58 to 1. Salisbury did not give up
one penalty corner to either team and had 20 corners against
Brockport and 15 against the Big Red.
Salisbury goalie Claire Davey-Karlson (one
save) played the first half of each game while fellow sophomore
Anna Cooke closed out the games in the second
half.
In the first game against Denison the Sea Gulls had seven
different goal scorers. Salisbury scored three minutes into the
game on a Correll goal and never looked back. SU led 3-0 at the
half. The other goal scorers for the Sea Gulls include; Lowery,
Hancock, Abby Tedford, Katy
Lamboni, Liz Tollett and Danielle
Lehman.
In the other games, Frostburg State University (5-1) defeated
SUNY Brockport, 2-0, and concluded the first day of the
invitational with a 4-1 victory over Denison (2-2).
During the Coach Dawn Chamberlin era (22
seasons) the Sea Gulls are 61-4 all-time in the SU Invitational. SU
has defeated Denison 12 straight years in the invitational and
outscored the Big Red 61-3. Denison first made its appearance in
the SU Invitational in 1994. Since 1997 the Big Red has not missed
a SU Invitational.
Salisbury will close out the invitational tomorrow morning with
an 11:15 a.m. contest against Frostburg State University. Denison
and SUNY Brockport play the early game at 9 a.m.
