SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Salisbury University
volleyball team extended its winning streak to eight straight
matches on Saturday as the Sea Gulls knocked off Cabrini College
and Clark (Mass.) University on day one of the 6th Annual Garnet
Classic hosted by Swarthmore College.
Salisbury (8-1) recorded its third and fourth straight
shutouts with back-to-back 3-0 wins against the non-conference
foes. The Sea Gulls defeated Cabrini (2-6) 26-24, 25-19 and 25-15
in the first match followed by a 25-14, 25-10, 25-20 win against
Clark.
Senior All-American Stacey Krebs and junior
Nicole Massarelli paced the offense with 13 and 12
kills, respectively, against Cabrini. Junior Rachel
Downes also turned in a fine performance as she found
holes in the Cavaliers' defense nine times to go along with 10
digs. Junior Gabby Long anchored the defense with
a team-high 16 digs and senior Jaime Marzocchi
recorded seven digs.
In game two of the classic, Salisbury defeated Clark (3-2) in
straight sets. Downes picked up where she left off in game one as
she was able to put away 12-of-13 kill attempts on the Cougar
defense. Krebs added nine kills of her own and sophomore
Lexy Fitzkee had a great game as she converted on
all five kill opportunities. Setter specialist Marzocchi did just
about everything against the Cougars. She put on a clinic as she
recorded 16 assists on 35 attempts, made two digs and also scored
two points on service aces.
In other classic action, the host Garnet defeated Clark, 3-2,
and beat Cabrini, 3-1.
The maroon and gold will head back to the court Sunday morning
to face Swarthmore twice. Due to a limited number of teams in the
classic this year, Salisbury and Swarthmore will face each other
twice. The second match will serve as the classic championship. The
first match is set to get underway at 10 a.m.
