Salisbury blanks Washington 3-0 to end home stand

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 17 Salisbury University men's soccer team completed its season opening home stand with a 3-0 victory over Eastern Shore rival Washington (Md.) College on Wednesday afternoon at the SU Soccer Complex.

Salisbury (3-0-0) fired off 25 shots in the game, 12 on goal, and were equally as dominant on defense as Washington took just three shots, two of which reached the goalkeeper. Junior goalie Greg Wellinghoff (two saves) recorded his second straight shutout this season.

Freshman Sam Forline scored his first collegiate goal in the 37th minute of the match as he took a pass from junior Benjamin Reed from across the left side of the box. Forline wasn't done yet. With 22 minutes left to play in the second half the forward scored his second goal of his career. Forline fired home a shot off a rebound that hit Washington (1-1-0) goalie James Bedrock (nine saves).

Sea Gull junior Kyle Sterling scored the game's first goal, 15 minutes in, after he received an assist from senior Scott Sparrow.

The maroon and gold will be on the road for its next three contests, first traveling to Lynchburg, Va., for the Shellenberger Classic this weekend (September 6-7). The undefeated Gulls will take on Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
