GETTYSBURG, Pa. - It was a dominant performance
turned in by the Salisbury University volleyball team on Friday at
the Bream Gymnasium during the first day of the Battlefield Classic
hosted by Gettysburg College. The Sea Gulls went a perfect 2-0 in
Pool D as Salisbury shut out Lycoming College, 3-0, and took down
Eastern Mennonite University, 3-1, in the night cap.
Senior Stacey Krebs set the new SU school
record for career kills as she recorded 26 combined kills in the
two matches on Friday. Krebs entered the tournament needing 19
kills to set the new mark. She set the new record in the second
match with Eastern Mennonite when she slammed down 12 kills along
with eight digs and two block assists. In the first match she made
14 kills in 24 attempts. She currently has 1,373 career kills in
four years at SU.
Salisbury (3-1) advances to Pool BB where the maroon and gold
will face The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey (10 a.m.) and
Johns Hopkins University (2 p.m.) on Saturday.
SU got things started with a 25-18, 25-21, 25-21 victory against
Lycoming on Court 4. Senior Jaime Marzocchi made
22 assists in 49 attempts while juniors Rachel
Downes (eight kills) and Nicole
Massarelli (three block assists) helped upfront. Senior
Sabrina Larmer added four block assists while
sophomore Melissa Stansbury had a team-high 14
digs
In the night match the Gulls held off Eastern Mennonite to win
25-13, 25-6, 22-25, 25-13. Marzocchi recorded her first
double-double of the season as she made 32 assists and 10 digs to
go with four service aces. Junior Gabby Long had a
team-high 17 digs, Massarelli had seven kills, three block assists,
three service aces and sophomore Alexandria
Malesick added six kills and three block assists. SU has
won three consecutive matches.
The Battlefield Classic features 18 teams from 10 different
conferences including five conference champions from last year.
Four teams went 2-0 on Friday in addition to Salisbury.
The other teams were Frostburg State, Eastern, Gettysburg and
Johns Hopkins. The Blue Jays had the toughest road to 2-0 as JHU
defeated Gallaudet and SUNY Cortland by the same 3-2 margin. Out of
the 18 matches on Friday eight of them were shut outs.
