SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury women's
volleyball team avenged their loss to Christopher Newport
University earlier in the season with a solid 3-0 takedown of the
Captains on Friday evening at Maggs Physical Activities Center. The
match moved the maroon and gold's record to 23-4 overall; prior to
the match, senior libero Gabby Long (Bel Air, Md.) was
honored for achieving the most career digs in SU volleyball
history.
In the first game, the Sea Gulls jumped out to a 20-10 lead, but
CNU quickly closed the gap. Salisbury junior outside hitter Lexy
Fitzkee's (Fallston, Md.) well-timed kill
ended the first game, giving the Gulls the upper hand with a score
of 25-20. SU senior outside hitter Rachel
Downes (Salisbury, Md.) finished with 12 kills on
the night, and Fitzkee added 11 of her own.
The second game was a back and forth battle as SU and CNU
exchanged points, forcing the contest beyond the usually allotted
25 points until an attack error by the Captains ended the match at
27-25. Christopher Newport's resolute defense kept the Sea Gulls
from establishing a decisive advantage throughout the game.
CNU dominated the early portion of the third game, and bolted to
a 9-3 lead over the Sea Gulls. Salisbury finally narrowed the
margin to 24-24 by launching a determined comeback late in the
game. A Fitzkee kill finally secured the SU victory in the
third game, 27-25.
The Sea Gulls' next opponent will be Capital Athletic Conference
foe St. Mary's College on Oct. 28th at Maggs
Physical Activities Center. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
