Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Salisbury University
volleyball team collected a pair of wins Friday afternoon at one of
the toughest tournaments in the country, taking down Randolph-Macon
College in five sets and sweeping the University of Mary Washington
in three, at the CNU Invitational hosted by Christopher Newport
University. The wins allowed coach Margie
Knight to reach 300 for her career.
“Being able to get to 300 wins anywhere is a real
privilege,” Knight said following the milestone-clinching
victory. “I have had many great players over the years that
have given me a chance to get 300 wins as a coach.”
Salisbury (19-2, 4-0 Capital Athletic Conference) got Knight
within one win of the milestone with a 28-26, 25-23, 21-25, 20-25,
15-13 win against Randolph-Macon. The Gulls were led by senior
libero Gabby Long's
(Bel Air, Md.) 38-dig performance. The mark was two
digs shy of a career-high for the senior.
Junior outside hitter Lexy Fitzkee
(Fallston, Md.) added a career-best 22 digs while
senior outside hitter Rachel Downes
(Salisbury, Md.) was good for 16 digs, and the pair
added 15 kills apiece. Junior outside hitter Melissa
Stansbury (Eldersburg, Md.) added 15 digs while senior
middle hitter Nicole
Massarelli (Clarksville, Md.) had 13 kills to go with
six assist blocks and two solo blocks.
The Sea Gulls topped Mary Washington (15-6, 4-1 CAC) in a
non-conference match, 25-6, 25-20, 25-20 to push Knight to win No.
300.
“We played very well against Mary Washington,” said
Knight, who is now 300-152 in her 13 seasons coaching the Sea
Gulls.
Long again came up big, contributing 22 digs in the UMW match
while Downes added eight kills and 12 digs. Freshman setter Carley Todd
(Centerport, N.Y.) had 18 assists to go with three
solo blocks and a pair of assist blocks. Fitzkee posted a team-high
10 kills in the nightcap while Stansbury had 13 digs.
The Sea Gulls will close out the CNU Invitational Saturday with
matches at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Salisbury will take on No. 2 Juniata
College first, before closing out play with the tournament host.
