LYNCHBURG, Va. - The top-ranked Salisbury
University men's lacrosse team used a 10-0 run to run away from
sixth-ranked Lynchburg College on Saturday afternoon at
Shellenberger Field as the Sea Gulls won easily 18-6 before a crowd
of 621.
Salisbury scored the game's first goal just 44 seconds into the
game as senior midfielder Kylor Berkman (four
goals, three assists) found junior attackman Mike
Winter (two goals) for the quick extra-man score.
Lynchburg (0-1) answered with an Ethan Farrell unassisted goal at
the 12:20 mark in the first quarter. From there Salisbury took over
and scored nine straight to take a 10-1 lead into halftime and
netted the second half's first goal to stake an 11-1 lead over the
Hornets with a quarter and a half to play.
The win gives the maroon and gold 47 straight victories dating
back to 2006. The win streak ties the NCAA men's lacrosse second
all-time mark of 47 set by Salisbury from (2/26/1994-5/18/1996).
The Sea Gulls also hold the overall mark of 69 consecutive wins set
from (4/17/2003-5/21/2006). Salisbury also hasn't lost a
regular-season game in seven seasons. The last team to beat the Sea
Gulls during the regular-season was Lynchburg in 2003.
Five different Sea Gulls scored two or more goals in the win as
the maroon and gold had 11 different goal scorers and 13 players
recorded at least one point. On attack, senior Stephen
Krasco (two goals, one assist), junior Jake
DeLillo (two goals) and freshman Matt
Cannone (one goal, two assists) scored two goals apiece.
Freshman Sam Bradman had a big game with two goals
and three caused turnovers while junior midfielder Mike Von
Kamecke (two assists) and Patrick Bonanno
(one goal, one assist) recorded two points each.
SU led 4-1 after the first quarter and outscored Lynchburg 6-0
in the second quarter. The Sea Gulls outshot Lynchburg 48-27 in the
game and grabbed 43 ground balls and netted five extra-man goals.
The two teams were fairly even on face-offs as SU won 14-of-27.
Sophomore goalie Johnny Rodriguez earned his
second win in goal for the Sea Gulls as he made 11 saves and
allowed only four goals in over 46 minutes of action. SU played all
four goalies and 39 players that traveled with the team to
Lynchburg.
The Hornets had six different goal scorers in the loss led by
Dylan Hoff who scored one goal and passed out two assists. Hornet
starting goalie Roland St. Clair Barrie (four saves) recorded the
loss as he last one half against the Sea Gulls.
Salisbury will next begin its Capital Athletic Conference
schedule on Wednesday, February 25, at home against Rt. 13 rival
Wesley College at 3 p.m.
