SALISBURY, Md. - Top-ranked Salisbury
University continued its winning ways on Wednesday afternoon as the
Sea Gulls defeated Wesley College 18-5 in a Capital Athletic
Conference (CAC) men's lacrosse game before 330 at Sea Gull
Stadium.
Salisbury (3-0, 1-0 CAC) has now won 48 consecutive games since
2007, the second longest winning streak in NCAA men's lacrosse
history. SU holds the top three streaks (69 wins, 48 and 47). The
Sea Gulls are still a perfect 101-0 in CAC play, including
conference tournament games, since they joined the conference in
1995. In addition, the Sea Gulls have won 80 straight
regular-season games and 76 in a row at Sea Gull Stadium since
2003.
Senior All-American Kylor Berkman (five goals,
three assists) continues his hot start to the '09 season as he
posted an eight-point game. Berkman, the reigning National Player
and Midfielder of the Year, has scored 13 goals and 11 assists (24
points) in three games. Freshman Matt Cannone
scored a career-high five goals while junior Mike
Winter added three goals and freshman Sam
Bradman scored twice. Junior midfielder Mike Von
Kamecke, second on the team in assists, passed out three
and scored his first goal of the season. Fellow junior Jake
DeLillo dished out three assists in the victory
and senior Patrick Bonanno added a goal and an
assist.
Wesley (0-1, 0-1 CAC) scored the game's first goal and two of
the first three goals as the Wolverines held a brief 2-1 advantage
over the Sea Gulls seven minutes into the first quarter. Salisbury
quickly responded with four straight goals to close out the quarter
up 5-2. SU outscored Wesley 5-1 in the second quarter as the maroon
and gold held a 10-3 lead at the half.
In the second half, the Gulls scored three straight goals
including a man-down goal by Cannone which was assisted by DeLillo
three minutes into the third quarter. Salisbury' final four goals
on the day were man-up goals.
Salisbury outshot Wesley 51-26 and dominated on face-offs as its
won 23-of-25 led by junior midfielder Ryan Finch
(19 ground balls) who won 19-of-20 face-offs. The Sea Gulls also
scooped up 51 ground balls and caused 14 turnovers.
Sophomore goalie Johnny Rodriquez made eight
saves as he played 41 minutes in between the pipes for the Sea
Gulls. All four goalies saw action as 46 players got in the game
for Salisbury. Wesley goalie Jim McCleaft suffered the loss as he
made 13 saves in the debut of Wolverine coach Bill Gorrow.
The Sea Gulls will next face Widener University in a
non-conference game on Saturday, February 28, at 3 p.m. Salisbury
defeated the Pride, a NCAA tournament team, 19-3 on the road last
season.
