SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 19 Salisbury
University baseball team had three pitchers combine to throw 14
shutout innings as the Sea Gulls swept St. Mary's (Md.) College 3-0
and 4-0 in a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday
afternoon at Sea Gull Field. Junior Chad Wolfe
blanked the Seahawks with a complete game shutout in the opener
while junior Kyle Starr and freshman Bill
Morton followed suit with a shutout of their own in the
second game.
Salisbury, who is also ranked No. 2 in the D3baseball.com/NCBWA
media poll, avenges a 2-1 loss it suffered last Wednesday (March
25) against the Seahawks on the road. The victories today snap SU's
two-game losing streak.
Wolfe (3-1) dropped his ERA to 1.14 as he scattered four hits
and struck out four in the first game. In the second game,
Starr (2-0) proved to be equally masterful as he held a
no-hitter through the first six and one-third innings before
SMC's Brad Shepherd singled. Morton would come in and retire
the next two Seahawks hitters to preserve the shutout and collect
his first save of the year.
Salisbury (19-4, 7-3 CAC) jumped out to a quick lead in the
first game never looked back. Sophomore outfielder Andrew
Miller (one run, two RBIs) brought in the first two runs
of the contest as he connected on his second home run of the year
with a shot over the left field fence. The offense in the first
game was led by Miller and sophomore designated hitter Brad
Baylis (2-for-2) who and collected
the other Sea Gull RBI in the third inning.
In the second game, SU mirrored its first game with a two-run
first inning to start the game. Miller walked with one out and
scored when junior first baseman Mike Celenza
ripped his fifth home run of the season as he cleared the right
field fence.
The game was scoreless for the next two innings before senior
outfielder Jordan Crystal (one run, one hit)
reached on a two-base throwing error by Seahawk shortstop Matt
Baden in the fourth inning. Crystal would score on the next
play when Baylis singled down the left field line to collect
his second RBI of the afternoon.
St. Mary's (11-12, 5-8 CAC) was baffled offensively again in the
second game. Starr did not disappoint in his home debut as he faced
24 batters, walked four and struck out five. His effort propels his
scoreless streak to 11 innings as he has not given up a single-run
this season.
Salisbury returns to action tomorrow (Sunday, March 29) at 1
p.m. as the Sea Gulls host No. 12 York (Pa.) College at Sea Gull
Field. The two teams met back on March 11 as the Spartans won 7-4
in York, Pa.
