SALISBURY, Md. - In a rematch of last year's
Capital Athletic Conference championship, the Salisbury University
women's tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to No. 10 University of
Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon at the SU Indoor Tennis
Center. The teams were both undefeated in conference play before
the match.
Salisbury (10-4, 3-1 CAC), ranked No. 9 in the Atlantic South
Region, fell behind early in the match to Mary Washington (14-7,
5-0 CAC) as the Sea Gulls were swept in doubles. The No. 1 doubles
team of junior Jackie Burr and senior Anna
Marie Kable fell into an early rut to Rebecca Morse-Karzen
and Katherine Malpeli and were never able to regain the lead. The
powerful serves of Malpeli proved to be too much for the tandem as
they fell 8-2. Senior Robyn Wendell and sophomore
Angela Tenaglia fell 8-2 to Amy Sheetz and Jocelyn
Lewis at No. 3 doubles while at second doubles, juniors
Rachel Iosue and Kelly Fahrner
were tagged with their third loss of the season after being nipped
by Katie Schafer and Courtney Giomarac, 8-5.
UMW, ranked No. 4 in Atlantic South Region, continued to build
on its lead in singles play. At No. 1 singles, Burr squared off
with Morse-Karzen. The tandem was tied at two all in the first set
before Morse-Karzen scored three consecutive points to take victory
in the set. Morse-Karzen jumped to an early advantage in the second
set and would never look back as she took the match in straight
sets, 6-3, 6-0. At No. 3 singles, Fahrner led early over Schafer in
both sets but could not keep it as she fell 6-4, 6-4.
In the closest match of the day, Iosue hooked up with Goimarac
at No. 2 singles. Goimarac's powerful forehands proved to be too
much as the Eagles would take the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. The battle,
which took almost three hours, resulted in Iosue's first
loss of the year. The Eagles finished out the afternoon with three
more victories. At No. 4 singles, Kable was unable to get
things going as she fell 6-0, 6-2 to Malpeli. At No. 5
singles, Wendell lost 6-1, 6-0 to Amy Sheetz while at
No. 6 singles Tenaglia dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Michelle
Meadows.
The Sea Gulls will look to get back to their winning ways on
Monday, April 13, when they travel to CAC foe St. Mary's (Md.)
College at 3:30 p.m.
